Wake-up call as virus deaths bounce back, with youngsters driving spread

Global daily coronavirus fatalities are nearing levels last seen in April in what experts have deemed a “wake-up call” as the pandemic continues to circle the world.

The seven-day average of daily Covid-19 deaths hit a record 7,465 worldwide on April 19. Throughout May and much of June this number consistently fell as Europe, then the epicentre of the outbreak, worked to contain the virus.

But the pandemic has since accelerated in the Americas and much of Asia. According to the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) and online scientific publication Our World in Data, the seven-day average on Tuesday reached 6,152 deaths...
