Ouch! Andrew’s absence from Beatrice’s wedding snaps will cut like a knife

They’ve always been a strong family unit, but the exclusion of the Epstein-tainted duke speaks volumes

Like the Yorks who went before them, Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah have always prided themselves on the strength of their family unit. When King George VI was the Duke of York, he used to describe himself, his wife the Queen Mother and their daughters princesses Elizabeth and Margaret as “we four”, a reflection of the strength of the bond between them.

Despite their 1992 separation and divorce four years later, Andrew and “Fergie” vowed to remain amicable for the sake of their own two daughters, princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. So their exclusion from their eldest child’s official wedding photographs, amid a continuing scandal over the duke’s links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, will cut like a knife.

With her father’s car-crash Newsnight interview casting a dark cloud over their engagement, announced six weeks earlier in September 2019, Beatrice had never intended her wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi to be a high-profile affair. The global pandemic put paid to their original plan to marry on May 29 at St James Palace with a reception afterwards at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Queen.
