Ctrl freaks: the virus will hand world domination to tech’s big 5

New era of supremacy awaits Apple and co who will probably emerge richer and more powerful than ever

If you want to imagine the future, listen to Eric Schmidt. The former Google boss, now free to speak his mind, said what many others in Silicon Valley may have been thinking when he declared last month that coronavirus should make us more “grateful” to tech giants.

“Imagine having the same reality of this pandemic without these tools. The benefit of these corporations, which we love to malign ... is profound. And I hope people will remember that when this thing is finally over,” he said.

He sounded like he was laying the ideology groundwork for a new era of tech supremacy, and perhaps he was. Last week’s round of robust financial results from Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple and Google’s parent Alphabet was firm evidence that big tech will probably emerge from the pandemic richer, more powerful and more dominant than ever...
