As cities and states in the US implement increasingly strict measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic, Donald Trump’s anxiety about the response’s effect on the economy has grown in parallel.

In recent days the US president, who has staked his leadership on the strength of the economy, has said “the cure cannot be worse than the problem itself”. He wants America to be “opened up for business”.
