‘This is abuse’: Snowden attacks big tech at showy Web Summit

Facebook, Amazon and Google accused of data abuse by CIA whistle-blower at industry conference

If further evidence were needed that the tech industry has reached ever greater heights of self-parody, you need look no further than the “Swag” section of the website for the Web Summit, the giant annual technology conference that kicked off on Monday in Lisbon.

Founded by Irish entrepreneur Paddy Cosgrave in 2009, the 2019 organisers are selling woollen sweaters for €850 (R14,000) and jumpers – as modelled by Cosgrave himself – for €780.

From its humble origins in Dublin a decade ago, Web Summit has morphed into an extravagant spectacle of tech-industry excess – on lavish display this week as 70,469 delegates trooped into Lisbon’s glitzy Altice Arena...
