Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Iraqi jihadist who rose from obscurity to declare himself “caliph” of all Muslims as the leader of the Islamic State group, has been killed in a US military operation in Syria.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Baghdadi was targeted in the overnight raid. US President Donald Trump made the announcement at the White House on Sunday.
