While Google and IBM bicker, here’s what the quantum claim means

The squabble between the rivals sound esoteric to the rest of us, but behind it all is the next giant leap in tech

It could be the working title for the next Bond movie – or possibly the scoreline in a game played at Hogwarts.

But Google’s claim to have achieved “quantum supremacy” this week at a hastily organised press conference in Santa Barbara didn’t provoke quite the reception the company had hoped for.

Instead of gasps of awe and excitement as the world absorbed news of the dawn of a new age of computing, the announcement instead triggered something else: an intense bickering session between boffins at two of the world’s biggest technology companies...
