Only final victory over America can bring peace, say Taliban fighters
As the group’s leaders continue talks with the US, its fighters are divided over the prospects for Afghanistan’s future
If peace ever comes to Afghanistan, then Mullah Sardar Muhammad has made a promise to his parents. The first thing the 28-year-old Taliban junior commander fighting in Ghazni province will do is get married.
For years he has disappointed his mother and father by putting off his wedding to concentrate on waging holy war against the Kabul government and its international backers.
“The only thing that has kept me on the battlefield has been the US invasion of Afghanistan,” he said. “We are close to success. But still this is not victory until we enter Kabul or take over Kabul. I don’t know what will come out from peace talks; my parents pray for the US to leave as soon as possible and see me married.”..
