Breaking plastic chains is like the end of slavery, says Attenborough

The naturalist says he has been warning about the dangers of plastic for two decades, to no avail until now

Sir David Attenborough has compared changing attitudes over plastic to the abolition of slavery, as he claimed 20 years of warnings about the issue had gone unheard.

The veteran television presenter likened the groundswell of concern over plastic at sea to the rapid hardening of attitudes against the slave trade in the 19th century.

He told UK MPs on the business, energy and industrial strategy committee that public perception had “been transformed” such that people now believed that “to chuck plastic into the ocean is an insult”...
