Is the baby going to heal the Markle rift? Is that a pig you see flying?
The new grandfather wasn’t informed of Baby Sussex’s arrival, but he congratulated the parents nonetheless
When the Duchess of Sussex was a little girl, her father, Thomas Markle, realised their family was not being properly represented.
There were no doll sets available that looked like theirs – a black mother and a white father. So Markle, now 74, went to the toy shop and bought two sets of dolls for his youngest child’s Christmas present – combining the families and leaving his delighted daughter with a set that matched her own.
It is this care and attention that Markle, a retired Hollywood lighting director, would have hoped to bring to his royal grandchild.
Upon hearing the news that his daughter gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Markle congratulated the new parents, saying: “God bless this child,” adding he hoped the child would serve with “grace, dignity and honour”.
But it seems unlikely that Markle will see his grandchild any time soon – indeed, he wasn’t informed by the palace of Baby Sussex’s arrival, and in October he only found out he was to become a royal grandparent by radio, sitting in a traffic jam in the Mexican town of Tijuana, near where he lives.
Since the wedding last year, Markle has done nothing but blunder from one embarrassment to the next, selling his daughter out every step of the way.
Firstly, he humiliated her with staged paparazzi photos before the wedding, and then he shunned the ceremony altogether, insisting he needed treatment for a heart condition.
He gave a series of tabloid and television interviews, each more outlandish than the last, before finally committing the ultimate betrayal and publishing her private letters to him.“What’s sad is that sometime in the next year Meghan and Harry will have a baby and I’ll be a grandfather,” he said two months after the wedding.“And if we’re not speaking, I won’t see my grandchild. How tragic is that – to deprive a child of its grandfather because I said a few things critical of the royal family?”He put on a brave face, however, and told a UK tabloid he had been “delighted” at the news his daughter was expecting, adding the duchess would “make a fantastic mother”, and that it all felt “overwhelming and joyful”.
Markle already has five grandchildren. His daughter Samantha has three children: Noelle, 19, Ashleigh, 32, and Christopher, 33. His son Thomas jnr is father to Tyler, 26, and Thomas, 27.
And perhaps Baby Sussex will indeed bring the family back together, despite all their feuds. “She plans to extend an olive branch to the family and invite them to visit after the baby is born – her sister [Samantha] included,” a friend of the duchess reportedly said.
“Meghan hopes and prays that the baby will bring her family back together.”
