The wedding singer for these billionaires? Beyoncé, of course
The big day for the daughter of India's richest man, is, to put it charitably, a little over the top
In the days leading up to a wedding, the average bride and groom might make last-minute arrangements with their venue, enjoy a cup of tea with their future in-laws, and celebrate their final nights of freedom with a hen or stag do at their local pub.
If you are the daughter of India’s richest man, of course, things are likely to be a little more glamorous.
The “pre-wedding festivities” of Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal, both the children of Indian billionaires, have been celebrated in some style this weekend after guests –including Hillary Clinton, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and leading businesspeople – flew in for entertainment including a performance by Beyoncé.
Isha, 27, is the daughter of Mukesh Ambani, the head of Reliance Industries and ninth-wealthiest person in the world, who is famed for his lavish 27-storey home in Mumbai. The groom, 33, is the son of Ajay Piramal, head of the Piramal Group, which is reportedly worth $5.4bn. The couple will marry in Mumbai on Wednesday. It’s billed on social media as the wedding of the year.
First, though were the lavish advance celebrations that are typical at such high-profile weddings. The festivities, in India’s western Rajasthan state, were attended by leading Indian and overseas businessmen, celebrities, socialites, politicians, sports and Bollywood stars, all of whom were driven from the airport in luxury sedans by white-uniformed chauffeurs sporting colourful Rajasthan turbans.
According to assorted Instagram accounts of guests attending the party, Beyoncé performed her most popular numbers, first in an exotic red costume with small mirrors topped by an equally ornate cape, and later in an embellished golden body suit. She sang Crazy in Love for the couple, turning the event into “one of the biggest musical nights that India has ever seen”, declared one Instagram account.
Access to the pre-wedding festivities was limited exclusively to invited guests, with the wedding itself expected to be a family-only affair. The guests, who have access to an app that maps out the wedding’s various activities, are believed to include Bob Dudley, the BP Group head, Arianna Huffington, the Huffington Post founder, James Murdoch, the Fox News head, Khalid al-Falih, the Saudi energy minister, and Lakshmi Mittal, the UK-based steel magnate.
The bride’s father runs one of the world’s largest refineries, in addition to owning television channels and one of India’s fastest growing cellphone and internet networks. He is reported to have a personal fortune of £37bn.
