A Walsh on the wild side: the 'Strictly' curse strikes again

A 'drunken' snog is the latest behind-the-scenes indiscretion contestants on the dancing show fall victim to

With more dalliances behind the disco and split-ups behind the splits, the Strictly Come Dancing “curse” has struck early this season.
The “curse” that gets UK fans of the show jiggling as excitedly as they do for the actual competition, refers to the behind-the-scenes hook-ups, break-ups, divorces and engagements that have become a seamy side-show to the series.
Some put it down to the spicy familiarity that flows from the intimate and seductive moves between the celebrities and their partners. Others blame it on the show’s chaotic, and stressful, schedule.
However it happens, it invariably explodes into a very public mess.
This time it has been precipitated by an unseemly “drunken” snog outside a London pub (I didn’t say it was classy).
Snog and pony show
The girlfriend of Seann Walsh has spoken publicly for the first time after he was filmed in a passionate embrace with his Strictly Come Dancing partner, Katya Jones.
Walsh, a comedian, and Katya Jones, who is married to a fellow professional dancer on the show, were seen kissing outside the pub last week.
Seemingly unimpressed with Walsh’s apology for his “drunken mistake”, his girlfriend Rebecca Humphries “liked” scores of tweets calling for her to end the relationship.
One tweet reads: “Erm so where’s the apology to @Beckshumps? Oh and mate, you’ve massively messed up here. Monumentally. She’s a 10. You’re now in the bin.”
Another says: “I wouldn’t say poor girl, lucky girl with a lucky escape. Sometimes being publicly embarrassed gives you the “fuck you” kick up your arse you need to leave rats in the sewers. It’s makes you stronger, and puts you on a MUCH better path, trust me.”
The actress also asked Marian Keyes if they could be friends, following a critical tweet from the author about Walsh and Jones.
After saying she was “for Seann and Katya” during their impressive Matrix-themed dance on Saturday night, Keyes retracted this following the revelations that the two kissed.
She tweeted: “Just to clarify, I’m not. I’m powerfully AGIN [against them]. Fuck them and their foncy Matrix choreography. What use is any a that if they have treachery in their hearts.”
Humphries replied: “Wanna be friends?”
She and Walsh no longer follow each other on Instagram.
‘My sincere apologies’
Neil Jones, Katya's husband and a backing dancer on the show, has remained silent about the kiss.
The dancer posted on Instagram on Monday morning: “It’s Monday and if you don’t mind I’m just going to hang out by the rocks with my smouldering look. What’s your plans for the week ahead???? . #mondaymotivation #rock #redhead#ginger #beard #tattoo #positivevibes.”
He has given vocal support to the pair, posting on Saturday: “Wow last nights @bbcstrictly movie week was really epic and I’m really proud of @mrs_katjones and @seannwalsh Paso Doble. Great shapes and of course like always the choreography was on point.”
Walsh, who has been supported by his girlfriend in the Strictly studios, said: “I would like to offer my sincere apologies for my actions. This is no excuse but it was a one-off drunken mistake which I am truly sorry for.”
Jones, who has been married to professional dancer Neil Jones since 2013, said: “I’m so sorry about any offence or hurt I may have caused with my actions. I wasn’t thinking and it was a one-off mistake after some drinks. I love my husband and we are very happy together, this is not a reflection on our relationship.”
A BBC source said Walsh and Jones would continue dancing together, with all three Strictly stars involved taking the approach of “very much business as usual”.
While fans have speculated that the pair should leave the show after being hit by the “Strictly curse”, former contestant Susanna Reid said it was “just a kiss”.
Reid said on Good Morning Britain: “It was just a kiss, and they’d had a few drinks, we’ve all had a few drinks. We’ve all had a few drinks and had a kiss, haven’t we?”
Jeremy Vine, who also appeared on Strictly, felt similarly. He told viewers of his show: “I thought, gosh I can see how this happens, because it’s a completely different space where it’s ... for me I hadn’t done any dancing and I’m seeing someone who is almost like a goddess, superhuman, the power and strength and grace of that person, and then you are spending eight to nine hours a day within two inches of them! It’s quite difficult.”
He said his wife was “quite cool about it” and she quoted Sybil Fawlty: “Really, do you think someone like that would be interested in a stick insect like you?”
However, he added that the Strictly experience is “a powerful thing”.
