Cough pours cold water on Sates’s world championship challenge

The ill-timed ailment has put the 18-year-old swimmer’s participation in Budapest in jeopardy

Fate has helped Matthew Sates make his choice for the opening day of the world championships in Budapest in Saturday — in the form of a cough. 

The 18-year-old had entered the 400m freestyle and 400m individual medley events, both scheduled for the first day of the showpiece, and a week ago he and coach Wayne Riddin had yet to decide which one they would focus on. 

One possibility was that Sates do the heats in both and then decide which evening final to compete in if he qualified for both. ..
