SA’s URC gain is the All Blacks’ and Wallabies’ loss, says Joel Stransky

Rugby pundit says being unable to regularly study our play will put them at a disadvantage when they meet the Boks

TV pundit and Springbok legend Joel Stransky says it’s still too early to tell whether SA’s switch to the United Rugby Championship (URC) was a masterstroke, but believes it’s bad for New Zealand and Australia.

It’s been almost two years since the top four SA franchises left Super Rugby to join the northern hemisphere sides in the URC, which could present exciting opportunities for the local teams. These include playing in the European Rugby Champions Cup against sides from England’s Premiership Rugby and France’s Top 14.

The first URC season is approaching its climax and three of the four SA sides — the Sharks, Stormers and Bulls — have booked their spots in the quarterfinals. The Lions started the group stage poorly, but finished strong. However, it was too late to reach the knockout phase...
