Proud Lions take lessons from first URC season and ponder dilemmas

The Lions have spent much of their inaugural season in the United Rugby Championship (URC) taking in lessons but the one they still need to master is to differentiate between unsportsmanlike and street-smart behaviour.

European teams in the URC are by now well versed in the rigours of travel through their many years in their continent’s respective competitions but they are still on a voyage of discovery when it comes to playing South African teams on this side of the equator.

Playing at altitude presents a particular challenge but some of the teams who have made stops at Loftus Versfeld and in particular Ellis Park have resorted to the questionable tactic of slowing the game down as they catch a breath in the rarefied air...
