The opening fortnight for the four South African teams in the United Rugby Championship (URC) didn’t drift far from script.
With all four teams required to play away from home in the initial phase of the competition, they were always going to be up against it in their clashes with some of European rugby’s elite.
Back in 1996 when SA’s teams officially entered Super Rugby under the aegis of Sanzaar, they too struggled to hit the foreign decks running. The then Transvaal lost their first four matches abroad, Western Province drew one and lost three, Natal won in Sydney and Wellington in their first four foreign outings, while Northern Tranvaal won in Christchurch but lost the other three in Australasia...
