1980 — Naas Botha, Rob Louw and Ray Mordt are among seven players who make their Springbok debut against a South American team at the  Wanderers cricket ground in Johannesburg. SA, who won 24-9, had not played an international since beating a World XV in August  1977.

1982 — Charlie Weir takes on American Davey Moore for the WBA junior-middleweight crown at the open-air Ellis Park rugby stadium in Johannesburg. The fight had been delayed for two days because of rain. Weir never got going and was knocked out in the fifth round. Moore later lost his belt to Roberto Duran, while Weir had two more fights before hanging up his gloves...
