It feels good to back them, but the beloved underdogs are a myth
We happily support them when it suits us, but we’re not generous when they’re our opponents
Everybody loves an underdog, or so they say. But do they really?
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) finale this past Saturday was a case in point. Kaizer Chiefs had the advantage going into their match against Baroka and were favourites to wrap up their title chase.
By comparison, Sundowns were the underdogs, though we all know they’re not real underdogs. The true underdog heroes were Baroka, who stole the 1-1 draw to save themselves from relegation fears and condemn Chiefs to another year with an empty trophy cabinet. ..
