Blast from the past: Potgieter hurdles to world record, but it’s game over
Today in SA sports history: April 20
1957 — Gert Potgieter breaks the world 440-yard hurdles record as he clocks 50.8 sec at the national championships in Queenstown. At the time, Potgieter didn’t know he’d broken the mark, admitting afterwards he had no idea what the world record was. He would break it again and was the favourite going into the 1960 Rome Olympics. However, serious injuries sustained in a car accident kept him out the Games.
