Giving Faf a national contract isn’t the best play for the Proteas

His form has to be questioned, while locking him in shuts out players who desperately need the experience

Faf du Plessis is a valued member of the Proteas national set-up with his experience, but the value of him having a national contract in a year when SA don’t have heavyweight international engagements leaves a lot to be desired.

As per Cricket South Africa’s statement on Monday, with the list of 16 national contracted men’s players, SA has a Test and T20 engagement with the West Indies away at the end of July, while there’s also a white-ball engagement with Sri Lanka away that’ll serve as preparation for the Australia-held ICC T20 World Cup in October.

The spread of the coronavirus means the status of these confirmed tours is threatened as cricket across all levels across the world has either been postponed or cancelled.
