How can World Cup winners be so kak at Super Rugby?

It is high time SA franchises stop letting their fans down routinely like they have in the past nine years

In the past 25 years of Super Rugby, SA franchises have underperformed. At times, to say they’ve underperformed is an understatement. They’ve been bottom drawer. After all, only SA has produced two teams in the Bulls (2002) and the Lions (2010) who have gone through a season without a win.

Such are the vagaries of Super Rugby, both sides have done well subsequent to those unimaginable depths – with the Bulls winning in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The Lions, who were relegated from Super Rugby in 2013, went on to play in three consecutive finals between 2016 and 2018.

Some Lazarus stuff that, but more is required from SA’s franchises considering how they have been outshone by their opponents. Between 2012 and 2019, four of the five New Zealand teams won the title, while the Reds (2011) and the Waratahs (2014) did Australia proud...
