The chorus of Brandy's song Should I Go from the album Afrodisiac winds along like this: “Should I go, Should I stay; I’m in control, either way.”

It’s a repetitive chorus, much like SA’s back-to-back Test losses to England in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It doesn’t quite ring true for Proteas captain Faf du Plessis. Whether he wants to go or stay, it’s not something he can control with the series now out of his hands.

It is a pity it’s out of his hands because the game doesn’t ebb and flow in the way an individual wants it to. There are other forces of nature who by sheer will of popularity and personality are able to script their own exits...
