The publisher’s brief was simple: write a book that places the reader in the shoes of a rugby writer on tour with the Springboks. There have been a number of books chronicling the highs and lows of Springbok rugby since readmission in 1992 but none, from a writer’s perspective, has dealt with the ecstasy and agony of life on tour.

This book reflects on my 23 years’ touring with the Springbok national teams and is also littered with the experiences of others I’ve met along the way.

Getting paid to watch rugby and travelling to every continent, except Antarctica, has been humbling and exhilarating. In the weeks leading up to a long tour people often ask “can I hide in your bag?”, “do you need a photographer?”, “can I carry your bags?”, but the reality is the vicissitudes of touring aren’t for everyone...
