The bar is already high for women in everyday life and it’s even tougher for them in sport – some respect is due

It has been a week of explosive emotions in SA after the rape and murder of UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana and the death of boxer Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels in East London at the hands of her boyfriend.

Gender-based violence continues to bedevil our society. We, men, are responsible for this. Incidents such as these often go unreported, but form part of a society that is at war with women.

We’re in a new season from a meteorogical perspective, yet the nation still carries the scars of a brutal winter for women – some of whom kept our hopes up when SA men’s national teams failed in various tournaments...
