When Thinus Delport ran out against Uruguay in the 2003 Rugby World Cup (RWC) in Perth he became the first foreign-based player to represent the Springboks at the showpiece event.

At each instalment since, the number of foreign-based players representing the Boks has grown. Until now. Rassie Erasmus’s squad for the RWC in Japan contains just eight such players, and that’s a significant drop. 

In 2015 Heyneke Meyer’s squad featured 12 players who were based either in the UK, France, Ireland or Japan...
