A rare kick to find hicks from the sticks transform SA rugby

It’s a big deal that Am and Mapimpi graduated from little known schools in the Border backwaters

If you’re from the Border region, like me, you wouldn’t associate schools like Jim Mvabaza and De Vos Malan with the Springbok production line.

The former school, in Twecu Location, didn’t even register with me. I’ve always known about the latter school, in King William’s Town, but it has always been considered a rugby backwater. It’s not the type of school that keeps you awake the night before the game.

Between the two schools, however, they have given the Springboks Makazole Mapimpi (Jim Mvabaza) and Lukhanyo Am (De Vos Malan). They deserve to be celebrated for showing that transformation does actually let the cream rise to the top when it’s given time...
