Irritation for Africa: CHAN is a big waste of time

It is just another vehicle to make money where there is little football value - only huge costs and logistical challenges

SA’s participation in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) brings zero football value and only high costs and logistical complications, leading to the question of why we should bother at all.

CHAN was introduced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) a decade ago and is a tournament open only to players who ply their trade in their domestic league.

The stated aim was to provide international competition for players who would traditionally not get the chance, since their national teams are filled with players who play in Europe or other African nations. But of course it is merely an opportunity for CAF to sell more sponsorship and TV rights, another vehicle to make money where there is little football value...
