The debuts for Herschel Jantjies and Rynhardt Elstadt for Saturday’s Test against the Wallabies grabbed the headlines but something much bigger is at play.

For the first time in SA’s 128-year Test history most of the starting team will be black when Eben Etzebeth leads out the side at Ellis Park in Joburg on Saturday.

What’s more, SA Rugby didn’t swing from the chandeliers because they are meeting transformation thresholds. That is perhaps in recognition that the team will be vastly different when they run out against the All Blacks in Wellington on July 27...
