On the face of it James Small was a typical rugby player – or at least the image of what a typical Springbok rugby player should be – tough and courageous, fast and fearless.

He was all those things but he was far from typical, and what we saw on the rugby field at weekends was not the full picture of a complex and occasionally tormented man.

Small, 50, died of a heart attack on Wednesday morning in circumstances that are still unclear. It was a tragically early end to a short life lived fully and at top speed...
