Our man saw only the first part of Australia’s innings against England, but that was more than enough

It’s 4am and hammering down the kind of rain that wakes you up and makes you look at your watch. Damn.

England are playing Australia in the World Cup at Lord’s. For a reporter who has written up SA’s shambolic performance at the tournament every which way and then some, and who will soon have to be back at that grim grindstone, this is as close to a day off as it gets.

Would that both these teams could lose. They can’t, of course, but you don’t really care who wins, you know the lunch will be decent, and who wouldn’t want to see what all that Ashes fuss is about, even if that’s proper cricket and this isn’t. And now it’s raining...
