Culling the professional pool of players and redistributing money will ultimately be a good thing

Depending on your view, SA Rugby’s new contracting model announced last week is either a brilliant way forward or a guarantee of driving even more high-profile players out of the country.

Basically, after lengthy consultation between provincial unions, players, through their union MyPlayers, and SA Rugby, there is going to be a culling of the professional pool of players and a redistribution of wealth. The vital point here is that players agreed to the new direction.

“Wealth” in SA Rugby is a relative term, because the sport is not rich in global terms. Every provincial union is financially struggling, mostly because they have too many players on their books...
