Blasts from the past: Benni brace boots out DRC in 1998
Today in SA sports history: February 25
1998 — Benni McCarthy scores twice as Bafana Bafana beat the Democratic Republic of Congo and secure their second straight spot in an African Nations Cup final. Substitute Keve Bembuana gave the DRC the lead in the 48th minute, but McCarthy equalised in the 60th minute, and then finally gave SA the lead in the 23rd minute of extra time.
2001 — Phil Masinga and the man who substituted him, Siyabonga Nomvete, score as Bafana Bafana beat Malawi 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match in Blantyre. Masinga netted in the 25th minute and Nomvete in the 81st before Patrick Mabedi clawed one back for the hosts in the 84th.
2006 — Isaac Hlatshwayo makes the first defence of his marginal IBO lightweight title when he outpoints Aldo Rios of Argentina over 12 rounds at Carnival City.
2011 — LJ van Zyl runs 47.66sec in Pretoria to break the 47.81 SA 400m hurdles record that Llewellyn Herbert set while winning the Olympic bronze at the Sydney Games in 2000.
