Today in SA sports history: January 25
1997 — Peter Smith, son of world title contender Kosie, is stopped in the first round of his bid for the marginal WBU’s newly created vacant super-cruiserweight title by American Yahya John McClain at the Carousel casino. The division, introduced by the England-based sanctioning body, did not find traction and was scrapped soon afterwards. Kosie Smith was outpointed by Argentina’s Victor Galindez for the WBA light-heavyweight crown in 1976.
