Blasts from the past: Aussie Open gets a Kriek in the neck

Today in SA sports history: January 3
1982 — Johan Kriek becomes the first South African to win a tennis Grand Slam singles title when he claims victory at the Australian Open in Melbourne. Kriek downed strong-serving American Steve Denton 6-2 7-6 6-7 6-4 in the final. The tournament, which started on December 24, was for the 1981 crown.
2009 — The Proteas step onto the field for the third and final Test against Australia in Sydney with the series already sewn up, having won the first two Tests. It was the first time SA has wrapped up a series so early Down Under.
