Blast from the past: Holiday punches his way to a record


Today in SA sports history: December 21
1996 — In one of the finest performances of his career, Phillip Holiday outpoints American Ivan Robinson at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut to defend his IBF lightweight crown for the fifth time. Holiday connected with 555 blows in that fight, at the time a CompuBox record for most punches landed in a championship bout.
2008 — The Proteas beat Australia in the first Test in Perth after a sensational fightback. SA needed 414 to win the match, having only once previously chased down a bigger total, 423 in England in 1947. Skipper Graeme Smith led from the front with 108 and AB de Villiers made an unbeaten 106. Three other batsmen scored half-centuries: Hashim Amla (53), Jacques Kallis (57) and JP Duminy (50 not out). In total SA batted for 119 overs and two balls to take a crucial 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
