Today in SA sports history: October 31
1998 — Vuyani Bungu produces one of the finest performances of his career as he scores a majority points win over Danny Romero in Atlantic City to defend his IBF junior-featherweight crown for the 12th time. One US judge gave it to Bungu by one point, while the second had it even. The SA judge, Lulama Mtya, had his countryman winning by five points. With this victory Bungu equalled Brian Mitchell’s record of defences by a South African world champion. Romero, a former IBF junior-bantamweight champion, was one of Bungu’s most high-profile opponents. His bout was also the main undercard to British phenom Naseem Hamed, a future opponent.
