Blast from the past: Willie throws in the Toweel in 1960

1960 — Willie Toweel fights for the last time in his career, taking on rising star Emile Griffith at Madison Square Garden in New York. Griffith won on an eighth-round technical knockout. Griffith lifted the world welterweight title soon afterwards, and in 1962 killed opponent Benny Kid Paret in the ring. Toweel had killed his friend Hubert Essakow in a similar tragedy in 1956, and he wrote a letter to the American encouraging him to continue. Griffith took consolation from that missive, and went on to fight 337 world championship rounds, more than any other boxer.
