Blasts from the past: Naas work by Bok debutants
Today in sports history: April 26
1980 — Naas Botha, Rob Louw and Ray Mordt are among seven players who make their Springbok debut against a South American team at the new Wanderers ground in Johannesburg. South Africa, who won 24-9, had not played an international since beating a World XV in August 1977.
1982 — Charlie Weir takes on American Davey Moore for the WBA junior-middleweight crown at the open-air Ellis Park rugby stadium in Johannesburg. The fight had been delayed two days because of rain. Weir never gets going and is knocked out in the fifth round. Moore would later lose his belt to Roberto Duran, while Weir would have two more fights before hanging up his gloves.
