Blast from the past: Potgieter, once upon a time in the vest
Today in sports history: April 20
1957 — Gert Potgieter breaks the world 440-yard hurdles record as he clocks 50.8sec at the national championships in Queenstown. At the time Potgieter didn’t know he’d broken the mark, admitting afterwards he had no idea what the world record was. Potgieter would break the mark again and was the favourite going into the 1960 Rome Olympics, but serious injuries sustained in a car accident kept him out the Games.
