1980 — Gerrie Coetzee takes on American Mike Koranicki, who is riding high after stopping Kallie Knoetze — Coetzee’s main local rival — a few months earlier. But Coetzee, coming off his points loss to John Tate for the vacant WBA title at Loftus Versfeld, brings him down to earth, knocking him out in the first round at Rand Stadium.
1996 — South Africa take on India in the final of the triangular series in Sharjah, UAE. Pakistan had been eliminated. Gary Kirsten scores an unbeaten 115 as SA reach 287/5 with Pat Symcox, coming in as a pinch-hitter, hammering 61 from 49 balls. Sachin Tendulkar and captain Mohammad Azharuddin are two of four Indian batsmen who get run out as their team end on 249/9 off 50 overs.
