Blasts from the past
On this day in history — February 7
1975 — Hellenic beat Maritzburg 3-1 at Green Point to win the Champion of Champions 5-2 on aggregate. All the goals came in the second half. During the interval Danie Malan upstaged March Fiasconaro in an 800m race which was joined by three streakers.
1976 — The second leg of the Top Four final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium is abandoned midway through extra time with the Buccaneers leading 3-2 on aggregate after furious Chiefs fans rioted over poor refereeing decisions. Believing they’d been robbed of victory, Chiefs supporters hurled bottles, bricks and even a barrel onto the pitch before breaching a 3m fence to storm the field. Referee Godfrey Motsoane, letting the second half run to 55 minutes, awarded a late and dubious free kick to Pirates while Chiefs were 2-0 ahead. Chiefs keeper Ronnie Malefatsane had carried the ball out his area, but only because he was being harassed and prevented from clearing the ball by a Pirates player. The free kick should have gone the other way, but Pirates netted from there, levelling the aggregate score at 2-2 to take the match into extra time. Then Jomo Sono produced a scorching dribble to deliver Pirates’ second goal of the match.
1999 — Mike Rindel plays his final ODI for South Africa at Centurion, scoring just 10 runs in his team’s 50-run victory over the West Indies in the last match of their series. Rindel played 22 limited overs internationals with an average of 27.38 and a highest score of 106.
2006 — South Africa lose to Sri Lanka by 76 runs in Hobart which eliminates them from the Tri Series also featuring hosts Australia.
