City of Joburg has taken everything from me, says whistle-blower’s son

City has not complied with R2.4m public protector’s order after dedicated public servant Lorraine Wilkinson’s death

The City of Johannesburg has found itself in the crosshairs of the office of the public protector after it failed to comply with an order to apologise and pay R2.4m into the estate of a former employee who was fired for being a whistle-blower.

“I’ve lost everything. The city has taken everything from me,” said Tyrel Wilkinson, son of the late Lorraine Wilkinson who lost of her job after serving the public sector for 25 years, thanks to exposing an irregularity.

“I saw my mother lose everything she had, including her health. She lost her car; the house was sold by the bank — we had to go and plead with the bank and show them her death certificate but nothing helped. She lost her ability to provide for her family. She was blacklisted and denied loans by other banks as well,” said Tyrel...
