Bring back the cane, says shaken teacher as provinces expel unruly pupils
Governing Body Foundation says since the return to normal schooling, some children have found it difficult to adjust
Two provincial education departments have expelled nine pupils for serious misconduct since January, including one for assaulting a teacher.
The expulsions come as schools countrywide experience a spike in rude, delinquent pupils who threaten, intimidate and insult staff and their peers. A retired maths teacher, still shaken after a pupil jumped on his back during a brawl, called for the reintroduction of corporal punishment after his ordeal: “It’s totally unacceptable. This stuff is bad. When is it going to stop?”
The expelled pupils include seven from the Western Cape and two from the Free State, while 35 recommendations for expulsion from school governing bodies in the Western Cape and four from Limpopo are being considered...
