A Covid fifth wave is sweeping Africa after a two-month lull, with 12 countries facing rising numbers of infections, said the director of the Africa CDC, Dr John Nkengasong, on Thursday — in his final weekly briefing after two years of managing the pandemic on the continent.

More than a 250,000 people have died of Covid in Africa and 11.5-million Africans have been infected since the first cases were detected in Egypt on February 15 2020.

“I’m departing with mixed feelings,” said Nkengasong, who has delivered Covid updates almost every week. He has been appointed the new head of the US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, which has major commitments in Africa...
