Covid linked to mental disorders in series of cases at Joburg hospital
Evidence is mounting worldwide that the virus is capable of invading and living in brain tissue, says expert
One ended up in a Pretoria township without knowing how she got there. Another became aggressive and started perceiving objects at abnormal sizes. The third had delusions about being persecuted and experienced hallucinations.
None of them had experienced mental problems before. But after they were admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Johannesburg, it emerged that they had one thing in common: Covid-19.
Neuropsychiatrists at Wits University believe their descriptions of the two women and one man in the SA Medical Journal (http://www.samj.org.za/index.php/samj/article/view/13573) are the country’s first formal reports of mental disorders linked to Covid-19. ..
