Tough cell: tasty ‘lab burgers’ on the menu for Cape Town?
Entrepreneur says cultivated meat will help the planet. And it tastes good too
A Cape Town entrepreneur who this month unveiled his first lab-produced beef burger says his mom still refuses to eat his cultivated meat.
But Brett Thompson is undeterred; he says it is just a matter of time until more people convert to “low impact” meat — and not just burgers. Lab-produced chicken nuggets, boerewors and even steaks are on the cards as Thompson seeks to expand his start-up business.
“Ultimately we want everybody in SA to eat more cultivated meat,” said Thompson, who was himself a vegetarian for many years — until he ate one of his own lab-grown burgers. “I still eat a mostly plan-based diet that includes cultivated meat,” he added...
