Zuma in yet another bid to get out of pre-birthday trial
His lawyers claim judge ignored special circumstances when ordering the trial to go ahead
Former president Jacob Zuma, who turns 80 next week, will on Monday seek yet another adjournment of his corruption trial which has been in the offing for about 15 years.
His lawyers have filed a formal application, which will be adjudicated by judge Piet Koen, sitting in the Pietermaritzburg high court, for the arms deal-related trial to be adjourned sine die (without a set date) or a date agreed to by the parties or determined by the court.
This, they say, will be pending the “conclusion and determination” of Zuma’s petition to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in which he sought permission to appeal against Koen’s dismissal of his bid to remove lead prosecutor advocate Billy Downer (https://www.timeslive.co.za/sunday-times-daily/news/2022-01-31-one-big-downer-how-can-i-be-prosecuted-by-an-accused-asks-zuma/) from his case...
