SA’s Ukraine envoy recalls heartrending moments but eager to return to work

Andre Groenewald has recounted his experiences of the war, including that of a student who had never left SA

“Ambassador, please just look after me.” These were the heartbreaking words of an 18-year-old student who begged Andre Groenewald, SA’s ambassador to Ukraine, to ensure he returned home safely when the war broke out.

“One of the things that made me almost cry a the beginning [of the war] was one of the young students, who is only 18 years old, who said to me: ‘Ambassador, it’s my first time out of the country and it’s the first living in another country, and I do not speak the language. Please, just look after me'.”

Groenewald, who arrived in SA on Monday, was reflecting on the mammoth task of assisting with the repatriation of more than 90 South Africans...
