Rocketing pregnancies among 10- to 14-year-olds a ‘savage indictment’
It is projected there will have been a 63.3% rise in births in this age group in the five years that ended in March
The number of new mothers aged 10 to 14 grew by nearly half in four years, new research has revealed.
The number of pregnancies in the first half 2021/22 suggests another substantial increase for the 12 months that have just ended and researchers said this was a “savage indictment” of society.
“In a country where gender-based violence is given such a high political profile, the fact that each of these pregnancies should result in prosecution, but is for the most part ignored, highlights how much effort is going to be required to remedy the problem,” they said on Tuesday in the South African Medical Journal (http://www.samj.org.za/index.php/samj/article/view/13549/10085)...
