SA teachers don’t make good pupils, SACE finds

Many sign up for development programmes but few report completion of activities


SA teachers are failing to engage in lifelong learning to improve their professional competence — if figures by the SA Council for Educators (SACE) are anything to go by.

Only 155,994 out of 478,245 teachers confirmed to the SACE that they had completed, among other things, activities and programmes such as short courses or facilitated or attended workshops and seminars.

Through a mandatory initiative known as Continuing Professional Teacher Development (CPTD), teachers are expected to achieve a minimum of 150 professional development points in a three-year cycle by completing activities...
